About this photograph
Could you capture Austin's electric pulse before the last light vanished?
I climbed Doug Sahm Hill at Auditorium Shores with purpose. The air was thick and warm, buzzing with cicadas somewhere in the tree line below. I knew the window was narrow.
The last rays of sunset were fading fast, and I had one shot at this. The Austin skyline was beginning to wake, tower by tower, amber and gold lighting up the glass facades like evidence lamps switched on in a darkened room. The Frost Bank Tower caught the last trace of purple in the sky. I steadied the tripod on the uneven crest and waited.
Waiting is the hardest part. The city known as the Live Music Capital of the World held its breath with me. I watched Sixth Street and the Congress Avenue corridor come alive below, the hum of the Texas capital quietly building.
Then the skyline committed. Every building blazed. The deep blue vault above sharpened against the gold grid of light below. The park grounds stretched dark and peaceful at my feet, path lamps flickering on like punctuation marks.
This city has grown at a relentless pace, and from Doug Sahm Hill, that growth tells a compelling story. This photograph is the record. Own it, and bring Austin's undeniable energy home with you.
