What if the grandest view of the North Rim was earned not just by hiking, but by outwitting a massive bull elk first?
While at the Grand Canyon, a huge elk took an unhealthy interest in me. For what felt like an eternity, I circled a parked car at Cape Royal, keeping it between me and a massive, unhurried creature that shadowed my every step, curious and utterly unbothered. The North Rim waited, patient as the canyon itself.
When he finally wandered off, I signed in relief and walked to the rim, and the Grand Canyon, the Abyss, the Grandest of American cathedrals, swallowed me whole. The afternoon sun draped the layered buttes in burnished copper and deep crimson, each stratum a chapter of Earth's biography carved by the Colorado River far below, a silver ribbon threading through two billion years of silence.
At Cape Royal, the canyon reveals itself differently than at the crowded South Rim. Here, the solitude commands the experience. The dry, warm air carried the faint scent of pinyon pine. Wind moved low across the plateau, and somewhere behind me, a raven called out, its cry swallowed instantly by the vast open space.
I raised my camera toward that solitary limestone butte anchored in the foreground, framing the infinite layers cascading beyond it. This was the shot, born from patience, a stubborn elk, and the golden mercy of a perfect afternoon.
Bring this moment of timeless grandeur into your home, a museum-quality heirloom of the American West.
