About this photograph
A curious reticulated giraffe leans toward the camera, filling the frame with its enormous dark eye, expressive face and unmistakable patterned coat.
I joined a photography tour at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas, expecting opportunities to capture graceful wildlife portraits from a comfortable distance. This giraffe had a different composition in mind.
As it moved closer, the elegant full-body photograph I had imagined disappeared. There was no room left for a long neck or sweeping landscape—only an inquisitive face looming over the camera. Instead of backing away, I embraced the unexpected encounter and made the photograph from the giraffe’s wonderfully exaggerated perspective.
The resulting portrait reveals the animal’s personality as much as its appearance. Its raised chin, outstretched ear and watchful eye create an expression that seems equal parts curious, confident and amused.
This playful wildlife photograph brings warmth and character to a nursery, child’s room, family room, office or safari-themed interior. It also makes an engaging gift for giraffe lovers, animal enthusiasts and anyone whose best adventures rarely go exactly as planned.
