Evening light illuminates the mountains above Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, their warm color reflected in the still water below. THE STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

I returned to Bear Lake nearly every day for a week, arriving before sunrise or coming back as sunset approached. I was hoping a moose would step out of the trees and wander into the water. Morning after morning and evening after evening, the lake offered changing clouds, glassy reflections and silence—but never the moose I was searching for.

Roughly fifty minutes before sunset, warm light reached Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain and spread across the lake. I had arrived looking for wildlife, but the journey gave me a different reward: the mountains briefly illuminated above their own reflection.
