About this photograph

In 1987, as a freshman in college, I watched a movie at Georgetown’s Palace Theatre. The seats were uncomfortable, the picture flickered, and for a few moments the screen even went dark. Truthfully, the theater was on life support and struggling to stay alive.

The Palace had been welcoming audiences since 1926. But decades of entertaining Georgetown could not protect it from changing times. In late 1989, unable to compete as a movie theater, it closed its doors.

But its story didn’t end there! The community rallied around it. Residents formed a nonprofit, raised money, and volunteered their labor. The Palace found a new role, giving living, breathing performers a place to tell their stories.

Even that comeback was tested. Debt brought another threat of closure, and in 2004, another wave of community support brought in $40,000 through a fundraiser, allowing the theater to survive. Now I've taken my family to see plays at this theater may times.

Here, the Palace Theatre glows before a new dawn, much like the new dawns of the theater’s history. Those lights mean more because of the darkness. This theater has earned its place in Georgetown, and Georgetown has fought to keep it.
