Lighthouse Rock rises above the layered red walls of Palo Duro Canyon, viewed from the elevated formation beside the famous hoodoo at the end of the Lighthouse Trail.
I began the hike in early April, under cold and windy conditions. As the day progressed, the chill faded and the weather became pleasant, although a strong Panhandle breeze remained along the trail.
From below, Lighthouse Rock appeared steep, rugged and a difficult hike. I'm glade I scrambled up! The saddle between the two columns is quite fun, and the view is pretty great.
This photograph captures the reward waiting beyond the easier portion of the trail: an intimate view of one of Texas’ most recognizable natural landmarks, earned one careful step at a time. Its red-rock colors and expansive Western scenery make it a natural fit for Southwestern, rustic, lodge-inspired or Texas-themed interiors.
