Before its steeple rose above the Texas fields, the people of New Sweden had to build a place where their faith could feel at home.
Organized in 1876 by Swedish immigrants, the congregation first gathered in homes, schoolhouses, and a small stone church in nearby Gregg. Their first church building was completed in 1879 and dedicated without debt, but their growing community soon needed more room. They extended the building, while families farther east still faced journeys on foot or by horse and wagon over roads that turned to mud.
Their answer was to bring worship closer. A chapel in Manda served the eastern families, and eventually a new sanctuary took shape between the two locations, on land donated by Johanna Petterson. Completed in 1923, the church pictured here lifted its copper steeple 104 feet into the Texas sky.
Nicknamed “the most photographed church in Texas,” New Sweden Evangelical Lutheran Church carries the story of a community whose determination and generosity created a lasting place of belonging.
In this photograph, its white exterior and slender steeple rise between dark trees, with warm orange and pink along the horizon beneath a deep blue sky. The cross stands high above the branches, giving this Texas church print a quiet sense of hope, rootedness, and home.
