Dan Goodwin

My love of photography began when I was 13. My father gave me my first camera, a 35mm Ricoh KR-5, and shortly afterward took me to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge near Rockport, Texas, to see what I could capture. I entered my favorite photo from that trip in my first-ever photography contest and actually won a prize! As far as I know, I may have taken third place out of three contestants—but I was hooked for life. I still have that camera, and the pictures!

Since then I've probably gone through a dozen cameras. Whether I am traveling somewhere new or rediscovering a place close to home, I am always looking for the view or detail that gives a place its character. I am drawn to landscapes, wildlife, or any scene that makes me stop for a second look.

People sometimes say you should put the camera down and simply live in the moment, but I am never more present than when my camera is in my hand. Looking through the lens makes me think about where I am, notice what matters, and really pay attention to what is around me.

I don't photograph just to remember what something looked like, but what it felt like to be there. I hope my photographs carry a little of that feeling with them and bring something meaningful to you as well.
