About this photograph
A bull moose emerges from the Anchorage woods with a mouthful of wildflowers—as if he were bringing his girlfriend flowers well before the autumn rut.
I had previously spent money on guided moose tours in Maine and barely spotted a single moose. Years later, I devoted an entire week rising before sunrise and returning after dark, determined to capture the perfect moose photograph in Colorado.
I should have gone to Anchorage first. Moose seemed to appear everywhere I went.
This handsome bull stepped from the trees with his growing antlers still covered in velvet and a collection of fresh leaves and flowers in his mouth. Perhaps he was merely enjoying breakfast, but I prefer to think I caught him bringing his girlfriend flowers to butter her up before courting season began.
The intimate portrait captures both the rugged character and unexpected charm of Alaska’s wildlife. Deep forest greens, delicate wildflowers, and the moose’s textured coat make this photograph especially suited to a rustic home, mountain cabin, hunting lodge, office, or nature-inspired room.
