Lamar Valley, Yellowstone
About this photograph
What does an American Buffalo say when dropping the calf off for school? Bison. I'm sorry. Really, I apologize for that joke.
This bison portrait captures a sleepy moment among green grass and woodland, with the intricate texture of his shaggy coat and a heavy eyelid giving him plenty of personality.
We were waiting in traffic in Yellowstone when we found ourselves watching this fellow doze off. From our car, we could see his eye open, linger for a moment, and slowly close again as sleep won out. In Yellowstone, wildlife often turns traffic delays into part of the adventure.
His massive frame and drowsy expression make an unexpectedly endearing combination. Earthy browns and fresh greens bring a touch of Yellowstone to a living room, office, or rustic cabin—a reminder that sometimes a memorable travel moment happens while you’re waiting to get somewhere else.
